Userpics?

I've been a tremendous slacker with LJ lately and that is gonna change!

First of all, I haven't changed my userpic in months and really miss putting my usual "what I'm reading" icon out there.  The shameful truth is that I now have a mac and have no idea how to create a userpic.  I used to use Irfan View to crop a picture ( I know I can do that in iPhoto.  At least, I think so, right?  Can I go find a book cover and save it into iPhoto?).  Then I would open it in MS Paint and put the text on.

Can anyone just tell me how to do it?  Thanks, dear f-list.

Happy 2012!

Happy New Year, f-list!  Hope you all had a great holiday/season/whatever with family, friends, and food.  I did.  Too much food, but I will remedy that in the next few weeks.

Take a look at Neil Gaiman's New Year's Wish.

Back to work tomorrow.  I am trying to bear it the best I can.  :)

I'm off to do something fun (I hope) next week.

My state provides funding for the NC Center for the Advancement of Teaching, which offers classes and seminars in the Appalachian Mountains in the western part of the state, near the campus of Western Carolina University.  Teachers can apply to go to week-long classes and the program pays to put you up in their facility and funds a substitute teacher while you're gone.  A group of us are going to learn more about using things like wikis and blogs as teaching tools.  We get to use Western's library and fitness center.  It's a beautiful area and I'm excited about going--I've been to Asheville before, but never to Cullowhee.

I'll still be around, though.  Virtually, that is.

me (is busy with a class, but spots a student sitting at a computer) : What did your teacher send you here to do?
sixth grade child:  I have to use a computer.
me:  What are you supposed to do on the computer?
child: Research.
me:  Research on what topic?
child:  Social studies.
me:  ...So, what exactly are you trying to find?
child:  Ancient Rome.
me:  Ok, now we're getting somewhere.  What about Ancient Rome do you need to learn about?
child:  Conquest and expansion of the Roman Empire.
me:  (blinks)  Wow, that's pretty complicated.   Did your teacher  have you bring a copy of your assignment so I can see it?
child:  No.  She just told me to research it.
me:  Huh.  Ok.  I have to go work with this class.  If you're going to use the Internet, I don't want you to use google or Wikipedia.  Go to the school webpage and click on the "Ancient Rome" links.  These are good websites and it will be easier to find what you need.

*three minutes later*

me:  !!!  Why are you at google?
child: There was nothing on those websites.
me:  It's been three minutes!!  You can't possibly have read through even one of them!  Go back and try again.
child:  *sigh*

*twelve minutes later*

me: Do you need any help?
child:  Can I print?
me:  No.  Take notes.

*fifteen minutes later*

child: I have to leave now.
me:  Did you take some notes?
child:  No.
me:  !!!  Why not?  You've been here thirty minutes!
child:  I didn't have the right kind of pencil.  *holds up a colored pencil*
me:  !!!  There's a whole bin of pencils right here!
child:  Oh.

I went unshopping*  today, then went to one of those cheapie chain bookstores because it was going out of business. I got: (for my library)  Firebirds, Instead of Three Wishes, Conrad's Fate, and Cart and Cwidder.

All for $10.25!

Woohoo.

ART and I had a great time shopping yesterday.  She showed me this little shop that sells beautiful crafts by artisans from third world countries.  I bought a beaded necklace.  Actually, I tried it on and  broke it.  But I really liked it, so I bought it and brought it home and fixed it.

I love my parents dearly, but I don't think there is anyone who knows less about computers.  Whenever they have a problem, they call me.  Of course I don't mind helping, but my dad knows so little that is is PAINFUL to walk him through the steps.  I had to get him to start the computer in safe mode, then do a system restore.  It took an hour and a half.  Plus, my phone died at one point, then he cut me off once.  *headdesk of frustration*

All in all, it's been a good weekend, despite how it started.

Also bought Firefly from ebay this week.  I had tried to rent it, but Blockbuster doesn't have it anymore.  Circuit City wanted $35 for it, so I was feeling pretty smug when I got it for $21.  Until it arrived today, with the Sam's Club price sticker of $18 still on it.

*that's when you return more than you buy.

Yes, that's a direct quote from my dear relative Anne's weblog. Here is more:

"Blog is such a funny word. It's so stupid when you think about it, too. Is 'weblog' that hard to say? Isn't that a little more dignified than 'blog'? Then again, someone who keeps a public diary of the nonsense in their life that no one cares about or reads is pretty undignified. Blog. Blog. Blog. Hahaha."

What a gal.
