It's not often enough that Library of Congress Subject Headings make the newspaper.

The front page, no less!  This is the Washington Post version.

Appropriate icon :)

If they wanted to lump them together, why not use British literature rather than English? English is just wrong!

Well, emmaco, "British" literature must not be a LOC subject heading. That's the whole problem. If it's not a carved-in-stone heading, it doesn't exist. :)

You can't add any? What happens if there's a new country or something?

Ok, I had to go look this up. They DO update it, but a common complaint is that they are far behind the times. For example, up until 1994 the subject heading was still "Afro-American" which hasn't been used in this country in forever. "Feminism" wasn't used until 1980. Racial, gender, sexual terms are outdated. Hopefully, if there was a new country, they would get to listing it a bit quicker than that. :)

Plus, it looks like there is a huge disconnect between the subject headings library catalogers use, and the ones library patrons try to find. Now that search engines can do such a good job of locating what a person is looking for, it seems as if library subject headings may be past their usefulness. They tend to be pretty artificial. Interesting stuff, huh??

Wow, you sure have blinded me :)

Now that I think about it I only rarely look at a subject heading now!
