Appalachian State beat Michigan!  Wow.

August is going in the record books as the hottest month on record here since at least 1944.  It was over 90 (32 C) degrees all but one day this month, and it got over 100 (38 C) six times.  We had .91 inches of rain.  Jeez.

I finally saw Pirate of the Caribbean 3.  Did anyone else think it was terrible?  I kept wondering, "What is going on??"    There were two people sitting near me in the cinema with 1-year-olds who let them run up and down the aisle and chatter.   And lots of kids who were 4 or 5.  What is wrong with these people?

After I got home I felt really sick.  I decided I was seasick.  All that swirling around, swingin on ropes, riding the waves for two and a half hours.  I'm serious; I think that's what it was.

I had had it by the end of the movie and was close to being first out of the theater.  Silly me, I had no idea there is a scene, after the credits, of Will and Elizabeth 10 years later.   The scene makes no sense until you read about it online.  I watched it on YouTube and came up with my own dialogue...

checkers version of the end of PoC3.

Small child Who Is An Angelic Mixture of Kiera Knightly's & Orlando Bloom’s Loveliness: I want my daddy! Wah!

Elizabeth: Darling, I explained all this to you, remember? Let’s go over it again. Daddy is…

SC: Daddy is dead.

E: That’s right sweetheart. And we can see him…

SC: We see him once every ten years.

E: Correct.  And once he was dead…

SC: He became smokin’ hawt with a bandana and a way cool scar.

E: Yes! Way sexier than ever. Oh! Look! Here comes his ship now!

Smokin' Hawt Will Turner:  Honey, I'm home!  Didja miss me?  (Sees small child) WTF?

SC: Yay! Daddy! You're home for a day!

E: Now go away, son, and I’ll see if we can get you a darling little brother or sister.

I've started Life As We Knew It by Susan Beth Pfeffer and it's gripping so far.

Agreed. The sequels were abysmal.

I liked the second one ok. The part where they sword fight in the wheel was worth seeing. But this one--gah. I wonder if they're making another about the fountain of youth?

They were so over-the-top! I liked it better when it was more realistic with just a little bit of magical stuff, instead of ALL magic...it was like they found a really good fanfic and were like "Awesome! Let's take on ALL the pirate cliches!". And Davy Jones's whole shtick was just depressing.

Seriously. I converted from pirate to ninja solely because of these movies.

Frankly, I think you're better off as a ninja. Their weapons are cooler and pirates have become quite commonplace.

Technically, I like sky pirates the best, airships and all that...but that's too specific. Ninjas are cleaner than pirates, at any rate.

Yeah, it would have been better without the sequels.

But if there were no sequels what would Orlando Bloom have been doing all these years? I have no doubt Johnny Depp could find work, but I'm not so sure about Orlando.

Well, he could always become ogling material a librarian ;-)

If Orlando were a librarian, he would be quite a hit at the next ALA conference.

I haven't gotten around to seeing it yet, but figured if I waited for the DVD there is no way I would be able to follow anything.

Hmmm.

Does Johnny make the trip worthwhile, or am I better off staying home and reading about Horatio Hornblower?

Maybe I was just tired of his character but it seemed like he didn't have much to do. He didn't even come into the movie for half an hour or so. I'd say read about Hornblower and catch it on dvd. And don't invite any 1-yr-olds over.

Home videos taken by the unskillful most definitely make me motion sick. Just to back you up.

I thank you for warning me away from Pirates 3. Really, what I need is to see the first without skips and decent levels to hear all Depp's dialogue. And watch Benny and Joon again.

The first movie's the best. I hope they're not making a fourth, but they left it open for another sequel.

WOOT WOOT! *does a happy excited dance, ignoring what this will say about ND when they (potentially! *half-hearted indignance*) lose to Michigan*

Aw, I kinda loved it. But then again, I rewatched the second one before I went to see it, and I went to see it at midnight with my best friend in the whole world. Also, I've noticed that small children in the theatre tend to bring out the worse parts of any movie (Becoming Jane with a screaming seven-month-old behind you? Even lamer than just Becoming Jane was).

That being said, your summary made me LOL.
SC: He became smokin’ hawt with a bandana and a way cool scar.

I have a very pretty icon just waiting to be used for that one...

I only paid $1.50 to see it and it was definitely worth the price to see Orlando with the bandana. Can't wait to see the icon.

Off topic, but Checkers, you must check out the John Green essay in the new Horn Book on gender issues -- "Hating the Hardy Boys." Loved it.

My new Horn Book hasn't arrived yet, but if it has an essay by John Green, you can bet I'll be reading it. :) Thanks for the heads up.

Yay! Commenting again!

I love your ending to the movie. I thought it was confusing and over-long but with some good bits. I was hoping the sappy ending would be avoided (I mean, TEN YEARS?! That's a long time to wait, even for someone who looks that good in a bandana) but it was not to be.
